I am completely freaking out about college costs. I absolutely want to go to college however my parents have not encouraged this path. Their motto is, “why go to college when you can already get a job?” I can’t believe they haven’t read the New York Times or even their local paper to know that earning potential over a life time is dramatically larger with a college education.
I have asked them to look into programs regarding parents reducing college costs. I really need for them to help me but they won’t get out of their Lazy-Boy recliners long enough to put in the effort. Don’t they understand I can’t afford education bills on my waitress salary.
It is hard changing the mind of people set in their thinking. I do, however, have a plan to try. My plan is to make a list of jobs and the matching yearly salary. I will have two columns of jobs: jobs that require an education, and jobs that do not require an education. I will let the math speak for itself and hopefully my parents will have a change of heart. Maybe they just want to keep me home and in this small town forever. Perhaps their lack of effort is out of love.
