Top Fields to Consider for Education and Employment

Students who are trying to decide which degree to pursue in college typically have a few requirements. They want a job that will earn them money after graduation. They want a job that they will enjoy. And they want a job that will give them some freedom to also have a personal life.

For those students, these are some of the best fields to pursue in the twenty first century:

  • Social technology. Technology has become a tool that unites people. Just look at wireless communication and online social networking. Enter this area on the cutting edge and you'll get job security with the flexibility to work from anywhere.

  • Anything "green". Eco-friendly actions are impacting every type of business so learning how to help others be more green can be a really important skill when you enter the job market.

  • Health care and support services. Everyone gets sick so there will always be jobs in this industry. They're increasingly well-paid and flexible to accommodate employee needs.

Of course, it's always hard to predict what new fields will emerge as important. If you have a passion for something in particular, you should chase it in spite of these trends!

Tips for Getting the Most out of College

Some people start college and immediately take to it like a fish in water. Others have to meander through the college system for awhile before finding their niche. And still others discover that college isn't the right path for them. These students may all be different but they all have the potential to gain something from the college experience.

Here are some master tips for getting the most out of your college experience:
  • Maintain a positive attitude. It's hard to learn when you're cynical or negative.
  • Be open to meeting people. The diverse group of people you meet in college can really expand your world view.
  • Take classes that interest you. Don't choose the classes with the best schedule or the easiest teachers. Don't pursue a degree just because it's a money maker. Enroll in classes that you'll actually enjoy.
  • Don't be afraid to change your path. You may find that a different degree, a different school or a different work-study job is something you'll need. Go for it.
  • Talk to someone about any problems. Whether it's a best friend or a counselor, venting can help you resolve the problematic things that do come up.

College will be a different experience for everybody but that doesn't mean that only certain people will benefit from it.
