Professional Baking and Pastry Program as a Niche Degree

Looking into available cooking schools for getting a culinary arts degree, I discovered that there are both general and niche degrees in this area of education. This surprised me since I figured that a culinary degree is itself a niche degree. However, with the prevalence of these types of programs and the sheer number of restaurants out there, the culinary degree has actually become less specialized. That has resulted in specialization within the industry. For example, looking into culinary arts training in Florida, I discovered that it's possible to get a degree just in pastry baking.

It seems to me that there are pros and cons of getting a niche degree such as a certificate from a Professional Baking and Pastry Program. On the positive side, a niche degree can make you more appealing to employers who specialize in that type of restaurant. Additionally, your specific expertise in the area could allow you to charge more for your services than if you only had a general degree. On the flip side, though, getting a specialized degree may limit your employment choices in a fluctuating job market. That could be a risk that a culinary student wouldn't want to take. The solution seems to be to pursue a general culinary degree but also to get certified in a niche area, effectively covering all of your bases.
